Libyan Foreign Minister Abdulhadi Al-Hweij, representing the eastern-based government, has voiced strong opposition to any agreement between the U.S. and the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity (GNU), led by Abdulhamid Dbeibah, regarding the deportation of migrants or criminals to Libya.
Al-Hweij described such an arrangement as a political maneuver aimed at prolonging the Dbeibah government’s stay in power.
He also noted that the United States does not recognize his government and deals exclusively with the Dbeibah-led GNU as the sole legitimate authority in Libya.
